MCCP with ISC-MKW, Renna Mobile holds exuberant sports & fun day

Muscat, Feb 11: The Mangalorean Catholic Centre of the Parish (MCCP) under the canopy of ISC-MKW and in association with Renna Mobile conducted a family Fun Sports Day ‘Fun in the Sun’ on January 26, which was complete with excitement, entertainment, and enjoyment at Sidab Grounds, Muscat.

The event drew a large number of participants and their families who were eager to be a part of the various fun-filled activities that were lined up for the day. Participants from the community spanning various age groups engaged in spirited competition, exhibiting remarkable zeal and enthusiasm.

The venue buzzed with activity as participants gathered for registration while simultaneously enjoying a delectable breakfast. The inauguration ceremony commenced as Fr Stephen Lewis, accompanied by Fr Marian Miranda, led the gathering in prayer.Emcee Sherwin D’Silva invited president Nirmala Goveas and the executive committee members to the dais, alongside chief guests Francis and Cynthia D’Souza, and guests of honor, Hansel Barboza, and Ajith Walder. Following his inaugural speech, Francis D’Souza, along with Fr Stephen Lewis and Fr Marian Miranda, unveiled the event banner, thus officially inaugurating the event. The guest of honour, Jessie Vivian Pereira, also graced the event with her presence.

A spirited march-past by the four competing groups set the tone for an exciting day. Subsequently, six men’s teams were formed for box cricket, adding a competitive element to the start of the games. As the box cricket league matches were underway, various categories of athletic games for children and adults were held simultaneously. Exciting sporting events that included frog races, rabbit races, sack races, as well as 50-, 100, and 200-meters sprints for children, along with 100 meters walking and running races for adults, drew a large number of participants. The competitions not only showcased thrilling finishes but also nurtured a strong sense of competitiveness among all who participated.

After a sumptuous lunch was served by RaRa Kitchen, it was time for the women’s box cricket as well as men’s semi-final games to commence. While the teams were vying with each other for the top spot, Nirmala Goveas inaugurated the traditional ‘Gudaangadi’ that had an impressive display of items and also served delicious snacks. The eagerly awaited fun games then began to everyone’s delight. Four teams competed tooth and nail with each other for games like coconut breaking competition, lagori, tug of war and longest human chain that made all present nostalgic and reminisce about their childhood days. The quotient of excitement was raised as a traditional cock fight was organized followed by an auction of the cocks as well as the gudaangadi items. A game of housie was then played by all present, thus adding a perfect finale to an enthralling day.

The day concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by community services secretary, Sunita Furtado. This was followed by honoring the referees and supporters of the event, as well as the prize distribution ceremony. Thus, the joy of a fun-filled day came to a close and proved to be a cherished one for all who participated and attended the event.

Oman MKW’S Tennex Ball Tournament: An international match experience

Muscat, Oct 19: The Mangalorean Konkani Wing (MKW) of Indian Social Club, Muscat, organized a mega league ‘Tennex Ball Cricket Tournament-2023’ on October 13, at the lush green lawns of Oman Cricket’s International Cricket Ground, Amrat, exclusively for the Konkani speaking community members of Oman. Six teams with players of extraordinary mastery in cricket showcased their mighty skills in batting, bowling and fielding. Huge spectators and team supporters gathered in the massive stadium, which is equipped with high beam floodlight and a large score display screen. Spectators had captured the best view from the high mount gallery in 3 levels, and enjoyed the state-of-the-art international cricket viewing experience.

The programme commenced late in the day compered by Peter Fernandes and Praveen Serra – a unique combination which people admire and love to see them leading every popular event in Oman. Ajith Walder – convener, welcomed the gathering and unveiled the amazing trophies of the tournament. He expressed great pride in launching this innovative concept of cricket being showcased for the first time within the community matches, which is under a sophisticated environment with international match refrees and score analyzers and live score updates through Oman Cricket App. He also wished a cheerful day and success to all the enthusiastic players. While keeping MKW’s core objective and tradition of simplicity and community welfare, Flossy D’Souza – an elderly guest among the gathering invited to inaugurate the event, and who then batted few balls at the cricket pitch as a symbolic gesture to declare the match open.

The ‘Tennex Ball Tournament-2023’ has been uniquely planned by the MKW’s executive committee 2023-25, with a fabulous logo and banner created by Vijai D’Cunha inspiring sportsman spirit among the cricket lovers. Ajith D’Costa (Sports Secretary), who is a well-known sports personality in the Mangalurean community in Muscat, was the man behind introducing a new concept in this year’s annual cricket, which indeed encouraged huge participation and had witnessed a great success and received full of praise from the community.

The cricket teams were previously invited to register, which was overwhelmingly responded within 24 hours of the announcement with 6 mighty teams on board. All the registered teams who were present at the venue, then placed in 2 groups to take the league matches against each other. At the beginning of the match Praveen Serra explained the rules to all the players.

Peter Fernandes introduced Samir Sattar, Freddie Lonappan and Kapil V as official match umpires who were well experienced and have International Cricket exposure. Sudhik P took charge as official scorer and Naveen Kumar as coordinator. Rinet Menezes handled the medical necessities at the sports venue. The main game then progressed with the umpires in command at the ground. The matches were restricted for 5 overs except for the finals it was 6 overs. Some strong batting lined-up were displayed by all the 6 teams with their fabulous batting, fielding and good pace bowling.

Vijai D’Cunha conducted time bound online quiz about cricket through the specially created quiz app with 10 MCQs each at 2 sessions, which kept the spectators engaged at the break time. Aman D’Costa and Neilet Fernandes won the quiz with 9 points out of 10 respectively. Peter Fernandes conducted amply fun filled interesting spot games, which were won by Cyril Britto, Tristan D’Cunha and Ashwini respectively. Loveline Rego – a well-known DJ provided the music to keep the athletes and the spectators cheerful throughout. Praveen Serra with apt Kannada mastery in commentary, Peter Fernandes in Konkani and Larry Rego in English, kept the crowd entertained with their lively commentary all through-out the match. Joachim D’Souza captured the exiting moments of the event in his camera. Naveen Kumar provided the seamless sound system.

The match was a tough battle between 6 strong teams under 2 groups, who played in the below order:

In the group stage matches ‘Royal Strikers’ from group ‘A’ and ‘MCCS Warriors’ from group ‘B’ qualified for the finals. MCCS Warriors succeeded to become champions in 1st maiden tournament and Royal Strikers secured runners-up position. Shibin Kalapureckel from ‘MCCS Warriors’ was declared as ‘Player of the Tournament’.

At the conclusion of the programme, trophies were hand down to the champion of the tournament, runner-up team, and the player of the tournament as well. A heartfelt expression of gratitude was extended through felicitation to the umpires, scorer, medical aid and all other support personnel. This was followed by Vote of thanks by Loveline Rego – co-convener, who gave due credit to all those who made this event a success, particularly to Ajith D’Costa who tirelessly worked for the success of the event.

MKW successfully demonstrated its ability to create memorable and inclusive sporting event, which marked their second biggest event of the year with huge participation and engaging experience.

Muscat: MKW’s vibrant ‘Konkani Family Fiesta’ joins hearts by roots

Muscat, Aug 17: The Mangalorean Konkani Wing (MKW) of the Indian Social Club (ISC) held a very vibrant, colorful, fun-filled cultural mega event ‘Konkani Family Fiesta’ on August 11 at the Platinum and Gold Auditorium of Oman Avenues Mall.

It was a fun and frolic event with games, cultural show and live performances, which gave the large gathering of members and their families a day-long entertainment filled with joy and laughter, and who at the end carried away a big smile.

The event began with an opening note from the master of ceremony Peter Fernandes, who is the force behind the whole preparation of this event alongside all the executive committee members. The tunes of national anthem of Oman and India were then played while the whole gathering stood in attention. As a Mangalurean tradition and sign of welcoming guests before commencement of any event, a tray full of betel leaves and areca nuts, and a pot full of water gestured towards the gathering. This followed by a welcome note by the convener of the MKW Ajith Walder, who welcomed chief guests, dignitaries and all the members and their families of Konkani speaking community.

Mebal Pinto, general manager of Marmul Travel & Hospitality Group, and Alwyn Pinto, chief guests were then invited on stage and escorted by Ajith Walder and Loveline Rego co-convener respectively and were greeted with flower bouquets. The event was inaugurated by lighting the traditional lamp by the chief guests, Ajith Walder, the youngest and senior-most guests among the gathering and Ajith D’Costa and Adolf D’Souza from the executive committee as well.

Ajith Walder then delivered his maiden speech. He said the Indian Social Club Oman, which represents Indian art, culture and social service in Oman, has provided an opportunity to form linguistic wings, and among the other 30 wings, the Mangalorean Konkani Wing is a prominent part of the club. He also emphasized that the Konkani language is expected to give the club more strength in this regard. He also said, “Featuring and providing a platform for the new and the talented has been our purpose, while relentlessly nurturing to give new dimension to a God given talent is our fulfilling passion. We believe that the young and little have a great role to play in ensuring a bright future of our families and our community as a whole.” He also reiterated, “We serve for a ‘cause’ and thus members contributing to a good ‘cause’ is compassion and humanity.” In this context, he quoted Mother Theresa who once said, “It is not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.”

He highlighted on the contribution made by the MKW in the past 6 years which has brought smiles in many faces. Through the Indian mission in Oman, the MKW contributed the essential things to the earthquake affected countries like Turkey and Syria in the past. The MKW also supported the travel, food and medical assistance to many during corona pandemic. It was all about trying to bring a small light in many lives, so this year also member’s contribution will go towards the needy, health and educational purposes of the deserving.

John Gonsalves, the vibrant community leader and former president of MCCP and GMCC and Joyce Gonsalves were then invited on stage and were requested to be the judge for the group games. They also been felicitated by Zibson Lewis by wrapping a shawl around their shoulders.

The guest audiences celebrating their birthday in the month of August were invited to the stage and a mass birthday Cake cutting ceremony was held. Sponsors, well-wishers were also felicitated with flower bouquets by Ajith Walder.

A ceremony of honouring the meritorious students of standard X and XII of the academic year 2022-23 was conducted by Meera Olivia Saldanha. Mebal Pinto honoured all the toppers of grade X and XII. Students who achieved more than 90% in grade X were Ransley D’Cunha, Nihan John Noronha, Nikhil George Noronha, Ronsy D’Souza, Clarita Saldanha and Lester Sheldon Andrade. The students who achieved more than 90% in grade XII were Rayner D’Cunha, Melina Natasha Goveas, and Merric Simon Lewis.

Peter Fernandes enthralled the audience with his skillful oration. The whole gathering divided into 6 groups, with each group having a captain to lead. ‘Kurlyo Group’ – led by Praveen Serra, ‘Sanktera Group’ – led by Flavia Dsouza, ‘Dhove Manji Group’ – led by Merita D’Souza, ‘Tarle Group’ – led by Shailesh Kutinha, ‘Vagolle Group’ – led by Reshma Pereira, and ‘Kampe Group’ – led by Noel Machado. Each of the group members were identified by colour ribbons tied to their wrist, with colours like red, yellow, green, navy blue, lavender, and white.

The groups then led to participate in the games and encouraged to earn points. All had actively participated with sporting spirit, zeal and enthusiasm. Peter Fernandes – compere and the core entertainer of the event ensured that everyone, regardless of the age participate and enjoy themselves in various competitive games and challenges. Selwin managed the scoreboard with timely update of points earned by each group.

It was then time for a sumptuous lunch. All gathering then stood up and recited salient prayer before lunch. A delicious lunch was served by South Express organized by Lancy Lobo.

Post lunch session begin soon thereafter. Solo singers/dancers and group singers/dancers were the true entertainers and left a mark of their own amongst music/dance lovers with their memorable presentations. Musical extravaganza comprising of a mash-up and exuberant performance by the Teams enthralled the audience. The cultural programmes of the event consisted of various dance numbers by talented people of all ages as well as evergreen musical numbers. Halfway through the programmes a light-hearted humorous standup comedy was performed by Rolson Cardoza to keep the spirit going. During the programme, raffle draws and a number of fun spot prizes with exciting surprises were conducted. The ladies and children ignited the stage with their awesome attire and stunning performances.

The entire event was very eloquently compered in Konkani dialect by Peter Fernandes, and assisted by Silivia Dias and Meera Olivia Saldanha. At the end, housie-housie game was conducted by Peter Fernandes and Praveen Serra. The event was meticulously planned and executed by the entire MKW executive committee which include convener Ajith Walder, co-convener Loveline Rego, treasurer Vijai D’Cunha, joint treasurer Adolf D’Souza, lady co-ordinator Silvia Dias, cultural secretary Lancy Lobo, sports secretary Ajith D’Costa, entertainment secretary Peter Fernandes and children’s wing secretary Olivia Meera Saldanha.

Vijai D’Cunha in his thank you note expressed the committee’s indebted gratitude to all the sponsors, well-wishers, participating teams, volunteers, and all those who supported to host this event successfully.

It was indeed a memorable day and a day to cherish.
